Biography
Bono and the Edge wrote GoldenEye for Tina Turner in 1995, a Bond title song built deliberately on the Shirley Bassey model and produced by Nellee Hooper; it reached number ten in Britain and the top five across much of Europe. Born Paul David Hewson in Dublin in 1960, he answered a notice on a school noticeboard at Mount Temple Comprehensive in 1976 and has been U2's singer and lyricist ever since. The band's arc runs from the declamatory War through The Joshua Tree, which made them a stadium act in America, to Achtung Baby and Zooropa, where they took the sound apart and rebuilt it in irony and electronics; Bono wrote the words for nearly all of it, drawing on politics, scripture and personal loss. Away from the band he co-founded DATA, the ONE Campaign and Product Red, campaigning on debt relief and on AIDS in Africa. He holds twenty-two Grammy Awards with U2 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2025.
