Tenor
Biography
A Spanish tenor whose work moves between opera, sacred music and zarzuela, Sergi Giménez-Carreras has sung with orchestras and companies in Catalonia and across Spain, in a repertory taking in Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and the Spanish composers. Through October and November 2013 he sang in the Carmen that State Opera Rousse carried across Spain — Cieza, Cortegana, Huelva, Écija, Seville, Teruel, Huesca, Barbastro and Zaragoza — and in the same weeks took part in Verdi's Requiem in Seville. Born in Barcelona, he studied with Maria Massia, with Gino Bechi in Italy, at the Folkwang Hochschule in Germany and with Isabel Penagos and David Mason in Madrid, and took masterclasses with Montserrat Caballe, Virginia Zeani and his uncle Josep Carreras; he read arts at the Central University of Barcelona and spent three years on acting and contemporary dance. Beside Tosca, La Boheme, Carmen, Luisa Fernanda and Don Alvaro in La forza del destino, which he sang at the Teatro Avenida in Buenos Aires, he has brought forgotten Spanish scores back to the stage: Granados's Liliana at the Espai Brossa, Albeniz's Lancelot in the Eduard Toldra hall, and Granados's lyric drama Follet at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Auditori Pau Casals, which he recorded for Columna Musica.
