The Edge

With Bono, the Edge wrote GoldenEye, the 1995 Bond title song recorded by Tina Turner. Born David Howell Evans in Barking, Essex, in 1961 to Welsh parents and raised in Dublin, he co-founded U2 at school in 1976 and built a guitar style out of repetition rather than display — an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man set to dotted-eighth delay, chiming intervals, the machine filling in the notes he does not play. It shaped I Will Follow, Where the Streets Have No Name and much of The Joshua Tree; on Zooropa in 1993 he took his first production credit. Outside U2 he wrote the score for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark with Bono and the theme for the animated series The Batman. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with U2 in 2005 and has won twenty-two Grammy Awards.
