The minuet that carries Boccherini's name is the third movement of the String Quintet in E major, opus 11 no. 5, written in 1771 for two violins, viola and two cellos, the scoring he adopted because he played the second cello part himself. Detached from the quintet, it circulated through the nineteenth century in arrangements for every conceivable ensemble and became the single piece by which he was known. Boccherini spent most of his career in Madrid in the service of the Infante Don Luis, and died there in poverty.
