Chopin played this concerto at the National Theatre in Warsaw on 11 October 1830, at the farewell concert he gave three weeks before leaving Poland; he never returned. He was twenty. It was the second of his two concertos to be written but the first to be published, in 1833, and took the lower opus number accordingly. Apart from a few youthful chamber pieces and songs, everything else he wrote involved the piano, and after these two works he abandoned the orchestra entirely. A projected third concerto survives only as the solo Allegro de concert.
