Glazunov wrote the A minor Violin Concerto in 1904 for Leopold Auer, the teacher of Heifetz, Elman and Zimbalist, who gave the first performance in St Petersburg in the spring of 1905 with the composer conducting. The three movements run without a break, and the cadenza falls between the slow movement and the finale rather than before the recapitulation, a design that lets the finale enter as a fanfare. Auer's students carried the piece around the world; Heifetz recorded it more than once and kept it in his programmes for decades.
