Fantastic Double Concerto

Minko Lambov's double concerto sets violin and piano against the orchestra in three movements, and the composer has described its starting point as the playing of Roma flamenco musicians in Spain: the melodic and metric formulas of that tradition, its sharp contrasts and its virtuosity, transferred into a sonata design. Jazz inflections and Bulgarian folk metres appear alongside the flamenco material, and rhythmic modulation gives the impression of tempo changes within a first movement whose pulse in fact never alters. Lambov also wrote a violin concerto and a pop opera, The Fisherman and His Soul.
