Mozart entered his last piano concerto in his catalogue on 5 January 1791. It was first heard on 4 March that year at Jahn's hall in Vienna, in a concert given by the clarinettist Joseph Bähr — the last time Mozart appeared in public as a concerto soloist. Sketch material suggests parts of it had been drafted two or three years earlier and set aside. The scoring is light, without trumpets and drums, and the finale uses the same tune as the song Sehnsucht nach dem Frühlinge, which he entered in the catalogue days afterwards.
