- Opus
- K. 550
- Composed
- 1788
Entered in Mozart's catalogue on 25 July 1788, the middle of the three symphonies he completed that summer within nine weeks, for no occasion that can be documented. He revised it afterwards, adding clarinets and rewriting the oboe parts, which indicates that a performance was in prospect, though none is recorded in his lifetime. It is his only symphony in G minor apart from the early K. 183, and the only one of the last three without trumpets and drums. The development of the finale opens with a bare unison passage touching all twelve chromatic notes.
