- Opus

- Composed
- 1788
Entered in Mozart's catalogue on 10 August 1788, sixteen days after the G minor symphony and the last he completed. The Jupiter name is not his; it was in circulation in London by the early nineteenth century and is usually credited to the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. In the closing pages of the finale five themes are combined in invertible counterpoint, the first of them a four-note figure Mozart had been using since childhood, so that a fugal display becomes the argument of the movement rather than an appendix to it. No performance in his lifetime is documented.
