Rachmaninoff wrote the Third Concerto in 1909 for his first American tour, practising the solo part on a silent keyboard during the crossing. He played the premiere in New York on 28 November 1909 with the New York Symphony under Walter Damrosch, and repeated it weeks later under Mahler, whose rehearsal discipline impressed him deeply. The dedication went to Josef Hofmann, who never performed it. Against the earlier works the concerto trades structural sprawl and rhetoric for clarity and proportion; even critics hostile to the composer conceded its quality.
