Schubert broke off work on this symphony in 1822 after two completed movements and a scherzo left in sketch, then gave the manuscript to Anselm Hüttenbrenner, in whose possession it stayed for more than forty years. He never asked for it back and never mentioned it again — a silence some scholars read as evidence that he considered the two movements sufficient. Johann Herbeck found the score in 1865 and conducted the first performance in Vienna on 17 December of that year, adding the finale of the Third Symphony to fill out the programme.
