Salvatore Di Giacomo wrote the dialect verses and Tosti set them in the mid-1880s, taking as their subject Marechiaro, a fishing hamlet below Posillipo where, in the song, a window with a carnation on the sill waits for the singer's serenade. The song made the place a destination; a plaque was later fixed to a window there in the poem's honour. Tosti wrote several hundred songs, most of them for voice and piano, and this is among the handful that entered the standard tenor repertoire.
