The Four Seasons
- Composer
- Antonio Vivaldi
- Genre
- Concerto
History of the work
The Four Seasons open Vivaldi's opus 8, printed in Amsterdam in 1725 and dedicated to Count Wenzel von Morzin. Each concerto is preceded in the print by a sonnet, and letters in the score link individual lines to individual bars: the barking dog, the drunken harvesters, the frozen ground, the summer storm. The set has been read as a landmark of programme music. The concertos had circulated in manuscript for some years before publication.
