Suite (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial)

Williams scored E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982 around a rising theme that never quite settles, used for flight, for parting and for the child rather than for the creature. The closing fifteen minutes gave him trouble synchronising with the picture, and Spielberg eventually re-cut the chase and the farewell to follow the music instead — the reverse of the usual order. The score won Williams his fourth Academy Award. He later drew a concert suite from it, and the adventure material has been played by orchestras far more often than the film's quieter cues.
