Belgrade's National Theatre and Philharmonic preserve two important strands of the city's performing-arts history. The National Theatre was founded in 1868 and opened its purpose-built theatre in 1869. Its opera activity reached an institutional milestone with Puccini's Madama Butterfly in 1920, followed by the first ballet performance in 1923.
The Belgrade Philharmonic gave its first concert on 13 June 1923 under its founder, the composer and conductor Stevan Hristić. The original orchestra brought together National Theatre opera musicians, music-school teachers and some amateur players. It developed subscription concerts combining established repertoire with contemporary works and appearances by visiting artists. Its first international performance took place in Sofia in 1936. The theatre and orchestra remain distinct institutions, with interconnected origins in the development of professional musical life in the Serbian capital.
