Poznan is where Poland keeps its birth certificate. On Cathedral Island the tombs of the first rulers — Mieszko I, who took the baptism of 966, and Bolesław the Brave, the first king — lie in the golden chapel of a cathedral standing on the country's oldest foundations: whatever Kraków and Warsaw claim, the state began here, and the Porta Posnania museum tells the story at the island's gate. The Renaissance town hall answers gravity with the city's best joke: at noon its clock releases two mechanical goats, which butt heads twelve times above the square to universal satisfaction — seven centuries of civic solemnity, resolved daily by livestock.
The trading city between Berlin and Warsaw made fairs its vocation — the international fairgrounds' tower is the skyline's badge — and bread its heraldry: the St Martin croissant, filled with white poppy seed, holds EU protected status and its own museum. The concert record documents the musical establishment precisely: the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra performing in the Aula Uniwersytecka — the university's great hall, renowned as one of Poland's finest concert acoustics (the record lists hall and university separately, one address in fact, flagged for the workbook) — while the Wieniawski violin competition returns to the city in cycles. Kings below, goats above, a philharmonic in the aula: Poznan balances its dignities perfectly.
