Sevlievo's emblem is its clock tower of 1777, one of Bulgaria's oldest, whose bell has counted the hours through Ottoman market days, Revival conspiracies and industrial booms alike — a fitting symbol for a town that has always kept time with the practical world. In the nineteenth century Sevlievo lived by leather: its tanneries and crafts guilds made it one of the wealthiest towns of the central north, wealth that built the handsome Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah, the stone bridge over the Rositsa, and the fine merchant houses of the old quarter — and that paid dearly in 1876, when the town and the nearby monastery of Batoshevo joined the April Uprising and bore the reprisals.
The tradition of making things never lapsed. Modern Sevlievo is one of provincial Bulgaria's industrial success stories — its factories, led by a global ceramics and bathroom-fittings producer, have earned it a reputation for quiet prosperity and full employment rare among towns its size.
The Rositsa valley around offers the Balkan's green foothills, the Batoshevo and Sokolski monasteries within excursion range, and a strong wrestling tradition that reveres Dan Kolov, the legendary champion born in a neighbouring village. The museum in the old konak, the art gallery and the chitalishte keep the cultural ledger as carefully as the clock tower keeps the hours.
