Biography
Marulev was born in Stara Zagora in 1954, graduated in opera singing from the Bulgarian State Conservatoire in 1979 from the class of Elena Kiselova, and joined his home city's opera the same year; he has been a soloist there ever since. His bass parts include Zaccaria in Nabucco, Philip II in Don Carlos, the title role in Boris Godunov; Dulcamara and Leporello for the comic side, and Sparafucile, Ferrando, Silva in Ernani and the Viking Guest in Sadko among the rest. He studied with Kim Borg in Weimar, with Ghena Dimitrova in Sofia, and in 1990 with Boris Christoff in Rome, the year he was a laureate of the Re Manfredi competition at Manfredonia. Twice he stepped into the running of the house, as its opera director between 1998 and 2003 and as artistic director from 2010 to 2012. Attila and Banquo stand on the same list.
