Baritone
Biography
Mauro Augustini was born at Meolo in the province of Venice. He won the Toti Dal Monte competition at Treviso and the Galeffi and Bastianini prizes at Busseto, and a scholarship at Parma took him to the Verdi Conservatory in Milan under Pier-Miranda Ferraro; he then worked on vocal technique with Mario Del Monaco and on interpretation with Tito Gobbi. Scarpia in Tosca at Zaragoza was his debut, and the Verdi and verismo baritone roles followed — Nabucco, Rigoletto, Amonasro, Iago, Tonio, Jack Rance — at the Arena di Verona, the Munich Staatsoper, Bonn, Kassel, Cape Town, Tokyo, Toronto, Moscow and, year after year, the Roman theatre at Plovdiv. In 2002 the foundation of Irina Arkhipova gave him a medal in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory for ten years of Verdi singing in Russia, according to his own published curriculum.
