Waterloo won the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden at the Dome in Brighton on 6 April 1974, with Sven-Olof Walldoff conducting in a Napoleon costume. It was the group's first release under the name ABBA and the first Eurovision winner to become an international hit, reaching number one in nine countries and the American top ten. Stig Anderson supplied the title, drawn from a book of famous events, and the lyric turns a military defeat into a metaphor for surrender in love. English and Swedish versions were recorded.
