Written in Paris in April 1778 for Adrien-Louis de Bonnières, duc de Guines, an amateur flautist, and his daughter, a harpist to whom Mozart was giving composition lessons. His letters home record the sequel: the daughter had no gift for composition, the lessons ended, and the duke paid only part of the fee. The pairing of flute and harp was a Parisian fashion rather than Mozart's own idea, and he never returned to it. The harp is treated much like a piano, and the concerto keeps to the galant manner Paris expected of visiting composers.
