Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major, K. 314, is an adaptation of an earlier Oboe Concerto in C major, written in the summer of 1777 for the Bergamo-born oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis. A year later, the Dutch flautist Ferdinand De Jean commissioned quartets and concertos for flute. Rather than compose an entirely new second concerto, Mozart transposed the oboe work into D major and revised the solo writing for the flute. De Jean objected that the piece was not original and refused to pay for it. The concerto nevertheless entered the central repertory of both flautists and oboists.
