Commissioned in the summer of 1791 through an intermediary acting for Count Franz von Walsegg, who intended to pass the work off as his own in memory of his wife. Mozart died on 5 December 1791 having completed the Introit and left the following movements in varying stages of draft, much of the sequence existing only as vocal parts over a figured bass. Constanze needed the fee and had the score finished, after one abandoned attempt, by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who claimed to have composed the Sanctus and Agnus Dei outright. Which decisions were his remains disputed.
