Dated 12 September 1775, the third of the five Salzburg violin concertos and the point at which the series changes character: flutes replace the oboes in the slow movement, and the solo writing turns from display towards song. The finale interrupts its own rondo twice — first with a slow episode in G minor, then with a folk melody in G major that turns up in other Austrian sources of the period. Mozart wrote all five concertos within about eight months and never returned to the form, though separate movements for individual players followed.
