Schubert wrote the Third Symphony between 24 May and 19 July 1815, a few months after his eighteenth birthday, and like the five other early symphonies it was heard only by the amateur orchestra that met in his circle. None of his symphonies was published or publicly performed in his lifetime. The score waited until the first collected edition of 1884 to reach print, and the first public performance took place at the Crystal Palace in London in February 1881 under August Manns. It opens with a slow introduction in the manner of a French overture.
