Classic and Romantic, op. 24

Classic and Romantic began as a cycle of piano pieces, in which Vladigerov set two manners against each other — a clipped, motoric neo-baroque writing and a broad singing line — as a study in stylistic contrast rather than as a suite of character pieces. The version heard in concert halls is not his own: the transcription for string or chamber orchestra was made in 1992 by his son Alexander Vladigerov, the conductor who did most to keep the catalogue in circulation after the composer's death in 1978.
