Waltz no. 2 (Suite for Variety Orchestra)

The Suite for Variety Orchestra was not assembled by Shostakovich. Levon Atovmyan put it together after 1956 from film and theatre music the composer had already written, and the waltz that stands second in it came from the 1956 film The First Echelon. A footnote added by an editor to the 1984 Muzyka collected edition labelled the suite Jazz Suite no. 2 — a genuine work of 1938 whose score had been lost in the war — and the error was not corrected in print until 2001. Under either title, that waltz became his most widely heard music.
