Amapola

José María Lacalle García, a Spaniard who emigrated to the United States, published Amapola in 1924; the Spanish text addresses the poppy of the title, and Albert Gamse later supplied English words. The song's second life began in 1940, when Jimmy Dorsey recorded it with Helen O'Connell and Bob Eberly trading choruses and took it to the top of the American charts. It has stayed in circulation since through film — Sergio Leone used it as a recurring motif in Once Upon a Time in America — and through the tenor repertoire.
