Caruso

Lucio Dalla wrote Caruso in 1986 after a stay at the Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento, where he was given the rooms in which Enrico Caruso had spent his final months in 1921; the hotel staff told him about the tenor's last weeks and his singing lessons for a young woman. Dalla recorded it on the album DallAmeriCaruso the same year. The lyric mixes Italian with Neapolitan dialect and never names the singer's illness. Pavarotti's recording of 1990 carried the song into the tenor repertoire, where it has stayed.
